It is fascinating to learn a new culture’s traditions, foods, and values. Today was a full journey into the heritage and traditions of Brazil, highlighted by Capoeira, food, history, and (for me) futebol.

We had a Capoeira class in the morning that taught us how Brazilians show respect to those they are up against. This Afro-Brazilian art form blends martial arts, dance, and music into one form of resistance and self-defense for slaves. We learned that even when slaves were “fighting” their slave owners, they were still showing them respect by not physically harming them and rather, only defending themselves. What stood out to me was the emphasis on respect within Capoeira. The Capoeira master explained to us that they use Capoeira to teach their students respect, and to give them a sense of community and cultural expression. This is a great tradition that we should take back to the United States.

At lunch, we had the opportunity to use our Portuguese to order our food. This was the first time we had to step up and fend for ourselves without the help of the Brazilian students. At lunch, we all ordered different traditional Brazilian foods, and we got to share them with each other. The tradition of Brazil comes out in the foods that we have been trying.

To end the day, Maggie, my host mom, and I took my host sister to her futebol practice. We got to watch as she was coached on a sport that has deep roots in Brazil’s history. The identity that is associated with futebal is seen in so many things; not only the professional soccer teams, but also kids playing on teams and in the streets.

Today was all about tradition. Collectively, these experiences capture how tradition permeates various aspects of Brazilian life, fostering a strong sense of identity and community.
